For thirty consecutive days Paul André Fortier will dance outdoors at piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina performing a 30-minute-long solo piece from 12:30 to 13:00, for a total of 15 hours that, according to Fortier, are, rather, “900 minutes of intimacy with a city”. The dog will bark, the traffic police will get agitated, passers-by will be surprised – intimidated, even. After Montréal, Yamaguchi, Ottawa and Nancy, “Solo 30 x 30″ lands in Rome where the climate, spectators, day-to-day affairs, the sounds or the acoustic pollution of the city are among the many stimuli that will inspire the Canadian artist and allow him to subtly vary from day to day his performance. A fleeting and dangerous challenge, indeed, that of “looking around to decide if one should go ahead without bothering about anything else or indulge in the luxury of stopping” Fortier explained. Exposing himself to the sun and the rain and to all sorts of comments, the movements of his body, in such an unusual context, reveal the desire for transgression and freedom, stressing the accent on urban reality, on the space reserved to the life of persons, on their alienation and redemption. Or as Fortier put it: “The dancer expects the public but is not expecting anyone: you will find him without looking for him” – a free-admittance show, without having (at long last) to book in advance.
After an experience as university professor of literature and theatre, Paul-André Fortier discovers dance in 1973, and devotes himself to it. He joins the “Groupe Nouvelle Aire” that produced a whole generation of Québec choreographers has been inspired. Later, his work leaves the paths of narration to approach abstraction.
IN EACH CITY, A VIDEO WORK IS CREATED FROM FORTIER’S PERFORMANCE. THE CHOREOGRAPHER IS NOT NECESSARILY THE SUBJECT, HE IS ALWAYS THE STARTING POINT. IN ROME, MEDIA ARTIST EMILIANO CAMPAGNOLA WILL WORK AROUND SOLO 30X30. HIS ORIGINAL CREATION WORK WILL BE SHOWN TO THE PUBLIC AT PALLADIUM, 9TH DECEMBER AT 5:00 PM. (Project to be confirmed)
