PALLADIUM

Where does a show by Caterina Sagna start and end? And where are the borders between theatre, dance, music, speech and gesture? Ever since she abandoned a rarefied and stylised choreographic style, she has been crossing genres with irony, in a theatre-dance that has been pushed to the limit of provocation: but according to the French press “Basso ostinato” is her most brilliant show; “a cruel farce” (Le Monde) that makes you “die of laughter” (Liberation).
Taken from musical jargon, the title “Basso ostinato” indicates the utilisation of a repeated rhythmical figuration: a recurrent technique in dance music that is always present in the pieces chosen by Luca Berni from the broad diversity of the Baroque repertory.
“Basso ostinato”, however, also means background chatter, such as the one offered by three dancers as they sit around a table over drinks and cigarettes talking about themselves and their art in an intimacy that is amiably trivial. With deftness, without complacency, revealing the family secrets of dance, Sagna, this time, seems to be laying the accent on the instant when language becomes gesture and choreography: obstinately repeated, the discourse focuses on where the movement begins.
But if the obstinacy of the rhythmic figurations endows music with new meaning, the meaning of the repeated word is paradoxically fragmented, dance becomes aggressive and convulsive while the spirit of Baroque music cajoles it into an unexpected elegance.

Caterina Sagna joins Carolyn Carlson Company at La Fenice Theatre in Venice. She founded the Nadir Company in 1987 and started a series of choreographies inspired by literary works. After this first phase, characterized by introspective and visionary research, in 2000 she founded Associazione Compagnia Caterina Sagna and turned to theatre-dance connoted by humour and irony. She was awarded the “Nouveau talent chorégraphique” prize by SACD in June 2002. In 2005 she moved with her company to Rennes (France) where Basso Ostinato premiered on 7th November 2006, for the Mettre en Scène festival of TNB (Théâtre National de Bretagne). She took part in the Romaeuropa Festival 2005 with Heil Tanz!
